The birth of hip-hop is documented to have taken place on August 11th, 1973, at a “back to school jam” hosted by DJ Kool Herc in the Bronx. This jam saw Herc begin to use the technique of looping breakbeats across two turntables, while his friend Coke La Rock took over the mic to hype the crowd up, adding rhymes over the beat. From there, the rest is history.

Nearly 50 years later, Nike is celebrating the anniversary of the AF-1, a silhouette that has been championed by the hip-hop community for 40 years, with a homage to the art form’s birthplace for today’s release of the Air Force 1 Low “Bronx Origins”. This iteration of the AF-1 takes on a crispy white tumbled leather upper, just like the OG, broken up by vinyl record-like Swoosh’s in black at the midfoot. A special 40th Anniversary tag is stitched at the tongue’s apex, while “Air Force One” text is debossed at the heel in Old English typeface. A few special details come together to wrap up this release, including vinyl record graphics printed at each insole, ‘1973’ and ‘1982’ lace dubraes nodding to the year’s hip-hop and the AF-1 were respectively created, as well as “BRONX ORIGINS” text placed below the sneaker’s translucent rubber outsoles.
