Telling a story of trash transformed, Nike begins the month of July with a launch focused on sustainability, dubbed the Space Hippie collection. Notable for being the brands lowest carbon footprint sneaker to date, the Space Hippie 04 is constructed from “space junk”, a catchall term for the sneakers recycled composition, from “space waste yarn”, which consists entirely of roughly 65% recycled polyester, to “crater foam”, which blends 15% recycled rubber with typical Nike foam cushioning. Debuting in two colourways, the Space Hippie 04 features a recycled yarn upper with embroidered Swoosh’s at the lateral midfoot and medial toe box, alongside a branded pull tab at the rear. A woven logo label is found at the tongue, while the laces are fixed in place with Nike’s proprietary Flywire lacing system. The upper then sits atop a “crater foam” midsole, which combines Nike grind with a blend of foams for stability, cushioning, and a unique, purposefully imperfect appearance.
